Cape Meares - Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint

The Three Capes Scenic Drive is one of the most popular scenic drives found along the Oregon Coast comprising a geographic area from Tillamook to Pacific City. The drive is named after the three capes (Cape Meares, Cape Lookout, and Cape Kiwanda) encountered on the route. The north end of the drive heads west along the waters of Tillamook Bay eventually arriving near the small town of Cape Meares and the beach strand of the Bayocean Spit. Directly south of the town is Cape Meares, the northernmost of the three capes and home to the Cape Meares Lighthouse sited on the western edge of the cape. Cape Meares juts out into the Pacific Ocean and rises approximately 200 feet above sea level featuring sheer rock faces heading vertically towards the ocean waters. The Cape Meares Lighthouse is the smallest lighthouse found on the Oregon Coast standing at 38 feet tall. While the navigational functionality of the lighthouse has been changed to an automated beacon system located nearby, the lighthouse has been restored and is now one of the main attractions available at the Oregon State Park known as the Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint. Alongside the State Park is the Cape Meares National Wildlife Refuge, established to protect one of the last remnants of coastal old growth forest. The refuge features trees over 200 years old and offers habitat protection to federally threatened bird species including Bald Eagles and Peregrine Falcons.
