Boiler Bay - Boiler Bay State Scenic Viewpoint

Heading south from Lincoln Beach, Highway 101 works its way into Boiler Bay, and then quickly enters the City of Depoe Bay, the Whale Watching Capital of the World. The Boiler Bay Area features some of the most picturesque coastal scenery located on the Oregon Coast. Boiler Bay itself is named after a shipwreck that occurred in 1910 involving the J Marhoffer and part of the ship’s boiler is visible still during low tides. The shape of the bay and the surrounding basalt cliffs combine to form the perfect setting for wave watching, especially wild during winter storms. Under more mild conditions, Boiler Bay is known for its incredible tide pools, showcasing the amazing sea treasures that reside in the ocean bay. The Boiler Bay Subdivision is positioned on the east hillside overlooking Boiler Bay and the home sites feature ocean vistas of the crashing waves below. One of the highlights along Highway 101 is the Boiler Bay State Scenic Viewpoint, a part of the Oregon State Park System. The park is located on a basalt headland the forms the south end of Boiler Bay. Besides the outstanding wave watching aspects of the park, whale watching and birding are fantastic when in season. A resident pod of gray whales that live along the Central Oregon Coast for almost ten months of the year, often feed along the waters of the Boiler Bay Area. Also, the park is ideal for observing whale spouts during gray whale migrations that occur every winter and spring. The park offers wonderful picnic grounds and restrooms, and is the site for Depoe Bay’s July 3rd Fireworks.
