The Cape Perpetua Scenic Area

The Headland of Cape Perpetua rises prominently above the ocean at 803 feet above sea level. On top of Cape Perpetua is the Cape Perpetua Overlook, a viewpoint area accessible from a hiking trail leading up to the overlook from the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center, or via a drive up to the overlook parking lot. On clear conditions, the Cape Perpetua Overlook offers visitors stunning views of the ocean out to sea plus scenic vistas of the coastline in both directions. A short trail leads west from the overlook to the historic West Shelter Lookout built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The West Shelter Lookout was used in World War Two as a Coastal Watch Station and today is a great spot for whale watching activities from high above the ocean. Another park attraction is the Devils Churn Viewpoint. The Devils Churn is a long and narrow crack worn away in the basalt rocks known for its amazing water displays created during heavy surf conditions.
