The Yachats 804 Trail System

A key attraction found within the City of Yachats is the Yachats 804 Trail System. The Yachats 804 Trail System is part of the former County Road 804, the route used for travel between the Yachats Area and the Waldport Area before the Oregon Coast Highway System was completed in the 1930s. The area was the scene of an extensive court battle for public ownership and right-of-way access eventually decided by the Oregon Supreme Court allowing public access to this area in 1986. The Yachats 804 Trail System is available for exploring from the park grounds of the Oregon State Park known as the Smelt Sands State Recreation Site. The park features a pathway connecting to the north section of the Yachats 804 Trail which heads northward for almost three quarters of a mile ending at a pathway leading down to the Beach Strand of Sandy Beach or to a stairwell connecting to Salmon Street. Along this northern route, the Yachats 804 Trail meanders along the rocky coastline offering wonderful seascapes of the crashing waves and spouting horns pounding against the rocks, the pocket beaches and tide pools dotting the shoreline, and the specialized plants living within the hearty coastal weather conditions. The various forms of natural vegetation found along the trail supports high levels of wind and salt spray including Sitka Spruce and Shore Pine Forests, native Salal and Twinberry Shrubs, riparian and wetland areas, oceanfront meadows and low-lying plants taking hold within the sandy beach areas. The other section of the Yachats 804 Trail System extends another mile southward, eventually ending at the Yachats State Recreation Area, an Oregon State Park overlooking the waters of Yachats Bay and the Yachats River.
