Sea Lion Point - Sea Lion Caves

Just south of the Heceta Lighthouse Viewpoint is the Sea Lion Caves, a privately-run attraction featuring the largest sea cave in the world and the rookery site for about two hundred wild Steller (Northern) Sea Lions. Highway 101 arrives at Sea Lion Point and the parking lot areas associated with the Sea Lion Caves built on both sides of the highway. The facilities of the Sea Lion Caves include a visitor center featuring outdoor artwork plus a gift store offering coastal-themed merchandise for sale. In addition, the visitor center sells tickets for accessing the sea cave itself via an elevator ride descending 208 feet to the bottom of the sea cave. At the bottom, the visitor can observe the inside portions of the naturally-formed amphitheater together with the sea lions taking shelter in the dank cavern. The dimensions of the sea cave are approximately the equivalent height of a twelve story building and the length of a football field. The basalt sea cave is believed to be 25 million years old and today features two main entrances to the sea, the Main Cave Entrance positioned almost vertically below the visitor center and the North Entrance located north of the elevator building. The sea lions populate the sea cave area throughout the year including breeding and raising their young. During the fall and winter months, the sea lions can be found inside the cave where during the warmer months of spring and summer the sea lions bask in the sunshine outdoors along the outer ledges of the rocky shoreline. Also, Sea Lion Point is home to several species of nesting seabirds breeding and raising their young along the secluded shorelines including a large colony of Common Murres.
