The Headland of Heceta Head

Jutting out into the Pacific Ocean, the Headland of Heceta Head immediately captures the visitor’s attention while traveling along the route of the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway with its rugged beauty and alluring vistas. On the western face of the Heceta Head Promontory stands one of world’s most prominent lighthouses, the Heceta Head Lighthouse Station. With the Heceta Head Promontory as its spectacular backdrop, the Heceta Head Lighthouse is believed to be the most photographed lighthouse in the United States and one of the most photographed lighthouses worldwide. Its shear scintillating beauty is a work of natural art, along with the Heceta Head Lighthouse carrying the distinction as being the most powerful lighthouse built on the Oregon Coast with its light beam visible 21 miles from shore. First lit in 1894, most visitors to the area wonder how the lighthouse was constructed on such a rugged setting and in such a remote place. Also capturing the spotlight is the Heceta Head Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast, an overnight lodging facility housing a heritage museum on the Heceta Head Area. As with most of Oregon’s ocean-facing promontories, Heceta Head dates back to an ancient lava flow exposed by the platonic work of the continental plates. Further over time, the forces of nature and the onrush of crashing waves have shaped the headland and its coastline into a magnificent setting supporting many local wildlife species including Harbor Seals and Sea Lions, Bald Eagles, and many other nesting seabirds coming ashore to breed and raise their young.
