South Aerial Guide Overview - Tour Two
The Community of Seal Rock - The Seal Rock Business Corridor |
||||||||||||
| The Community of Seal Rock draws its initial heritage as a quiet summer resort destination built during the bustling days of the railroad era, when the rail line ended at Yaquina City on the Yaquina Bay bringing travelers from the Willamette Valley. During the late 1880s, the associates of the railroad company built summer homes here as well as a large hotel was erected in the area. Today, the Community of Seal Rock still keeps to its roots with a small area of commercial development, found mostly on the east side of Highway 101 in the center of the community. On the west side of Highway 101, the real estate property has developed mostly as ocean front home sites overlooking the beach strand of Seal Rock. Highway 101 remains the dominate force bringing visitors into the Seal Rock Area, especially during the summer months when vacation travel is at its peak. The business corridor is made up of primarily small businesses operating along the roadside catering to the daily travelers of Highway 101 as well as to the people staying on the Oregon Coast in vacation properties. While small in size and scope, the local businesses encompass a general selection of retail establishments found elsewhere in other coastal towns. Cultural Arts Businesses are especially enticing here and include several wood carving studios, art galleries and a glass blowing studio. Also, small retail boutiques together with fudge and candy stores add to the popularity of stopping in the Seal Rock Area. Several restaurants and snack shops further add to the appeal of the community. For vacation use, the Seal Rock Community offers a variety of choices including a privately run outdoor RV Campground, Bed and Breakfast Lodging Facilities and property management companies specializing in the handling of vacation home rentals. The Seal Rock State Recreation Site is conveniently located at the south end of the business corridor adding to the site-seeing experience of visiting the Seal Rock Area along with its nice beach access and tide pools. |
