Yaquina John Point - Governor Patterson Memorial State Recreation Site

South of the Alsea Bay Estuary is Yaquina John Point, a land point named after Chief Yaquina John, one of the last members of the Alsi Tribe that once inhabited the Waldport Area prior to white settlement. The Yaquina John Point Area includes a small number of city streets built on the west of Highway 101 forming small pocket neighborhoods possessing a variety of residential home sites and several shared access points for the community to enjoy the beach strand surrounding the point. Also, the Yaquina John Point Area features stunning vantage points of the ocean breakers colliding against the waters of the Alsea Bay Estuary plus picturesque view lines of the Alsea Bay Bridge. On the east side of Highway 101 is the Waldport Ranger Station, one of the four offices set-up within the Central Coast Ranger District-Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area of the Siuslaw National Forest. The Waldport Ranger Station is open to the public for sharing information about the recreational opportunities available within the Siuslaw National Forest in addition to supplying office facilities utilized by the U.S. Forest Service Department and other organizations. Heading further south on Highway 101 is the park grounds of the Governor Patterson Memorial State Recreation Site, an Oregon State Park offering public restrooms, scenic picnic areas and access to the lengthy beach strand known for its relatively flat nature. The Development of Ocean Hills built on the east hillside opposite the park offers a gated private retirement community catering to 55 or older residents.
