South Aerial Guide Overview - Tour One
The City of Newport - Yaquina Bay Lighthouse |
||||||||||||
| Set on top of a hillside bluff overlooking the Yaquina Bay, the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse stands proudly as a restored lighthouse within the confines of the Yaquina Bay State Recreation Site. While the lighthouse operated only for a time period from November 3, 1871 to October 1, 1874, the lighthouse carries a long history of government use and later neglect. Through the spirited campaign of many concerned citizens, the lighthouse was saved from demolition and restored beautifully to its original heritage. The lighthouse was officially re-lit on December 7, 1996 as a privately maintained aid to navigation displaying a fixed white light visible at sea for six miles. The lighthouse is believed to be the oldest structure in Newport and the only existing lighthouse structure in Oregon with the living quarters attached. Also, the lighthouse was listed in the Historic Registry of Historic Places, U.S. Department of the Interior. The lighthouse was designed as a harbor lighthouse and included a fifth-order Fresnel Lens installed as the light optic. Due to its limited visibility out at sea and it light beacon being blocked from visibility by the Yaquina Head Promontory, the lighthouse was decommissioned in 1874 after the lighthouse at Yaquina Head became operational. The lighthouse later was used as crew housing for the workers building the Yaquina Bay Jetty System and then served the U.S. Lifesaving Service as a crew quarters and lookout station. Today, the lighthouse is accessible to the general public for self-guided interpretive tours. The lighthouse tour covers the two main levels featuring time period exhibits highlighting the living and sleeping spaces of the structure. A stairwell leads to the third level and to the watch room exhibit where the tour ends. The lantern house and current light source are not available for public viewing. |
