Cascade Head Scenic Research Area - Salmon River Estuary
The Cascade Head Experimental and Scenic Research Area provides a diverse habitat for a variety of wildlife species including four federally listed endangered species. The endangered species that use this area include the spotted owl, marbled murrelet, coho salmon, and the Oregon silver spot butterfly. Also, from a geographic standpoint, the county line that separates Tillamook County and Lincoln County is located within this section of the Siuslaw National Forest. The Salmon River Estuary is part of the Cascade Head Scenic Area and is located on the southern end of the area. The Salmon River flows west from the coastal mountain range and meets the Pacific Ocean creating the estuary ecosystem and the bar built spit area. The Salmon River Estuary is estimated at 437 acres in area, along with an approximate watershed area of 75 square miles.
