City of Depoe Bay - Depoe Bay Highway 101 Bridge

One of the enduring landmarks along the Oregon Coast is the coastal bridges created by famed bridge architect Conde B. McCullough, a master of bridge architectural elegance and design. As the Oregon State Bridge Engineer during the time period of 1919 to 1935, McCullough designed many of the coastal bridge systems that continue to be aesthetically appealing and yet highly functional. One of McCullough’s famous bridges is the Depoe Bay Highway 101 Bridge, built in 1927 and 1940. Today, the bridge is one of Depoe Bay’s most photographed Points of Interests and serves as the archway for mariners coming in and out of the Depoe Bay Harbor Channel. The bridge layout includes a pedestrian pathway along Highway 101 in addition to roadway access over the harbor channel entrance. Also, the bridge design includes a pathway underneath the bridge that leads to the east side of Highway 101 where pedestrians can view structural aspects of the bridge construction as well as enjoying views of the harbor area plus the charter boat fish cleaning stations. Overlooking the bridge area is the City of Depoe Bay’s Painter Building. The building now houses the Whale Watch Spoken Here Program Office, a part of the Oregon State Parks and Recreation System. This park center offers indoor facilities for spotting whale activity, and serves as an interpretive resource center for whale education supported by short films and an On Location Park Ranger. Also, the building location affords a wonderful vantage point for watching the harbor’s local boating activity as well as providing an excellent observation site for viewing the activities of the Fleet of Flowers Memorial Day Ceremony.
