| Located approximately .4 miles offshore, the rock formation of Gull Rock serves as both a scenic landmark around the Otter Crest Area as well as being a protected habitat zone within the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge. The scenic qualities of Gull Rock dominate the local scenery of the Town of Otter Rock plus the viewpoints found in the Oregon State Parks within the Otter Crest Area. The views of Gull Rock are especially memorable from the observation lookout at the Otter Crest State Scenic Viewpoint, the western edges of the developments at Seacrest and the Inn at Otter Crest, and the picnic grounds set up at the Devils Punch Bowl State Natural Area. Gull Rock is part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge and is protected from human disturbance year round. Many wildlife uses are supported at Gull Rock including grounds for seabird breeding and nesting, a haul-out spot for harbor seals, a secluded place for brown pelicans to land and a food source for birds of prey like bald eagles. Six species of seabirds utilize the habitat area of Gull Rock including common murres and Brandts cormorants. Besides the main rock formation of Gull Rock, the surrounding waters near the Town of Otter Rock are home to a variety of small exposed rocks and submerged reefs supporting a rich selection of underwater ecosystems. These habitat zones support rock fish species, encrusting corals and sponges, invertebrates, marine mammals and bull kelp. South of Gull Rock, is another visible rock formation known as Otter Rock. Otter Rock is best visible during low tidal conditions plus from the turn-out vantage points found along Highway 101, near the park entrance to the Beverly Beach State Park. Also, the beach strand of Beverly Beach offers additional angles of Otter Rock. While not always visible, the natural rocks and reefs found in the nearshore zones of the coastline provide valuable support and protection to the species that populate this thriving ocean ecosystem environment. |
