Otter Crest Area - Devils Punch Bowl State Natural Area
South of Cape Foulweather, the sandstone bluffs found within the south section of the Otter Crest Area straddle the ocean shoreline and connect with rock formations at a point near the Town of Otter Rock. These bluffs are home to the planned community of Seacrest and the condominium development known as the Inn at Otter Crest. The Town of Otter Rock is sited on the south end of Otter Crest and is a community development governed under the jurisdictional authority of Lincoln County. The cliffs surrounding the Otter Rock Area provide the coastline transition from the rocky shorelines of Depoe Bay and Otter Crest to the sandy beach strands of Newport and South Lincoln County. This transition occurs at the western edge of the Otter Rock Area at the Oregon State Park known as the Devils Punch Bowl State Natural Area. The name of the park comes from a hollow bowl formation found in the rocks along the bluff, the remnants of a collapsed sea cave. The wave action around the rocks provides a swirling of the waters within the punch bowl, a wonderful spectacle for onlookers visiting the area. One highlight of the park is the marine gardens found at the north end of the grounds featuring exquisite tide pools areas for exploring the inhabitants of the inter-tidal zone. The park has nice picnic areas setup on top of the bluff creating an ideal setting to soak in the beautiful surroundings and the fresh ocean air. Other features include paved parking spaces, a building with public restrooms and a stairwell path leading to the Beverly Beach, a nice beach strand in North Newport.
