Cape Foulweather - Lookout Observatory and Gift Shop

Rising stoutly above the ocean waters below, Cape Foulweather dominates the Otter Crest coastline. Cape Foulweather was discovered and named by Captain James Cook, the famed British Explorer and Navigator who was the first to sight the mainland of North America on the Pacific Coast during his voyage in March of 1778. Captain Cook named the promontory after the severe weather encountered on that historic day that almost sank his ship, and even today, winds in excess of 100 miles per hour can occur on top of the cape during stormy conditions. Access to Cape Foulweather is available from either the Otter Crest Loop Road or via an exit turnoff from Highway 101 to the east of the cape. The crest of Cape Foulweather houses the Otter Crest State Scenic Viewpoint, an Oregon State Park Facility and the privately owned Lookout Observatory and Gift Shop. The gift store was built originally in 1937 and features a variety of coastal themed merchandise including natural history books on the Oregon Coast, coastal art décor and keepsakes, and a terrific collection of glass floats. Besides the wonderful shopping aspect, the store design includes a variety of windows framing the awesome beauty of the ocean below and the surrounding Otter Crest seascapes. The store continues to be a prime destination viewpoint for both travelers and locals sightseeing their way along the Oregon Coast.
