Otter Crest Area - Otter Crest Loop Road - Cape Foulweather

As the Otter Crest Loop Road traverses over the Rocky Creek (Ben Jones) Bridge and past the Community of Miroco, the roadway then heads south along the cliffs of the Otter Crest Area on its way up to the crest of Cape Foulweather. This scenic byway winds its way along the edges of the steep hillsides and through beautiful evergreen forests affording fantastic views of the sparkling ocean waters below, the treed settings of the sloping terrain and the north approaches of Cape Foulweather. While the Otter Crest Loop Road supports one-way vehicle traffic heading south, the roadway is part of the Oregon Coast Bike Route in addition to being one of the most scenic pedestrian trails available in Lincoln County. Several turn-out spots along the roadway are accessible for taking in the gorgeous scenery. The first turn-out features extraordinary views of Gull Rock and the coastline area of the Town of Otter Rock. Gull Rock is an offshore island and is part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge plus an important protected area for nesting seabirds and marine mammals seeking shelter along its rocky perches. Several other small turnouts offer views of the sheer cliffs and the ocean waters below and also dramatic views of the north faces of Cape Foulweather. The roadway curves its way back and forth and eventually ends at an intersection at the crest of Cape Foulweather and the site of the Otter Crest State Scenic Viewpoint. The intersection provides access for connecting to Highway 101 or continuing southward towards the Town of Otter Rock. Also, the intersection provides access to the Otter Crest State Scenic Viewpoint, and the privately owned Lookout Observatory and Gift Shop. Cape Foulweather rises almost 500 feet above the ocean and provides an unusual vantage point for whale watching activities.
